Meta Acquires Conductor and Sets a Nov. 20 Shutdown

Three lamp-lit desks in a dark studio, with an open box of cables on the floor.

Meta acquires Conductor, the multi-agent coding startup that runs Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor in isolated workspaces, in a deal confirmed Nov. 4 as a staged shutdown begins. Conductor Cloud goes read-only on November 13 and shuts down on November 20, when cloud user-data deletion starts. The local Mac app keeps working until early 2027.

Key Takeaways

  • Meta acquired Conductor, used by more than 100,000 people.
  • Conductor Cloud is read-only Nov. 13 and shuts down Nov. 20.
  • The Mac app continues until early 2027, then winds down.
  • Deal terms were undisclosed; a new interface is due early 2027.

What Conductor’s Parallel Coding Agents Do

Charlie Holtz and Jackson de Campos founded the company, formally Melty Inc., in 2024, and launched in July 2025. Developers run several coding agents at once, each on an isolated copy of a codebase, then review and merge the results. Supported agents are Anthropic’s Claude Code, OpenAI’s Codex, and Cursor. Conductor does not build those agents; users pay with their own subscriptions and keys.

The desktop app runs on Macs. Conductor Cloud runs agents in sandboxed virtual machines for hours, and an iPhone app lets users check on them. TechCrunch reported that teams can be deployed in the cloud, locally, or from a phone.

SiliconANGLE reported that more than 100,000 people use it. A $22 million Series A in March, from Spark Capital and Matrix, named Meta, Google, and Spotify among companies with dozens of engineers on the product. Meta’s engineers were using Conductor before the deal.

Conductor Cloud Shutdown Dates to Meet

New sign-ups and downloads stopped on November 4. Pro subscribers now get paid features free, and active subscribers will receive refunds. Conductor said it has never sold user data or trained models on it, and does not plan to.

Milestone Date What changes
New sign-ups and downloads Nov. 4 Halted
Conductor Cloud Nov. 13 Becomes read-only
Cloud shutdown Nov. 20 Ends; deletion of cloud data begins
Local Mac app Early 2027 Model updates and critical fixes stop; data deleted at shutdown

Before November 20, export data or move cloud workspaces to the local app. InfoWorld reported the local app keeps receiving new models and critical bug fixes until early 2027, then begins winding down, and Conductor deletes user data when the app shuts down. Meta has not described the replacement interface or said whether today’s integrations will remain.

  • Export cloud data or move workspaces locally before November 20.
  • Plan for Conductor Cloud to become read-only on November 13.
  • Treat Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor support in 2027 as unconfirmed.

Why Meta acquires Conductor for Coding Tools

Holtz wrote, “I have big news: Conductor is joining Meta,” TechCrunch reported. He added, “We have some big, crazy plans for the next interface,” teasing “something new” for customers by “early next year.” On X he said he looked forward to working with Alexandr Wang, Meta’s chief AI officer, and Nat Friedman, head of product at Superintelligence Labs. “They’ve been on an absolute tear, and I’m convinced MSL has the highest talent density of all the labs,” he added.

Meta confirmed the deal to TechCrunch and would not comment further. Terms were not disclosed. People familiar with the deal told Axios that Meta expects the team’s speed at shipping products to help build its next AI coding tools, SiliconANGLE reported. TechCrunch noted that Meta had lagged in AI services and spent several months trying to catch up.

It launched Muse Code in August, and recently reported that Muse agents had surpassed 10 million users. On Oct. 15, SiliconANGLE reported, Meta released Muse Spark Open, an open-weights model aimed at coding and long-running agent work, while Muse Wonder models stay closed inside the Muse Code terminal and API. The Conductor deal landed the same day OpenAI said it plans to acquire developer tools startup Pierre Computer, after announcing in June plans to buy Ona, which runs coding agents in cloud sandboxes.

What Multi-Agent Development Means for Teams

Lian Jye Su, chief analyst at Omdia, told InfoWorld, “The most important differentiator of Conductor is it sits above individual coding agents.” He expects Meta to maintain a model-agnostic approach. Pareekh Jain, CEO of Pareekh Consulting, said Meta may keep supporting third-party models while integrating its own more closely.

He also said, “It’s a small step, not a game-changer,” and, “Meta still needs enterprise-grade security, governance and integration capabilities to challenge these established players.” Those include Microsoft, which owns GitHub, plus OpenAI and Anthropic (see GitHub Copilot Fusion).

Su said human review before merging is an important control point when agents work on separate copies of a codebase, and that variations in agent performance could complicate coordination. He warned that additional agent-to-agent communication increases the potential attack surface, and that responsibility for autonomous actions becomes more difficult without continuous human oversight. Jain said parallel agents could accelerate software releases and reduce development costs, although enterprises would need to manage code quality and resolve conflicts when integrating outputs. For engineering managers, that means moving cloud work before November 20.
