Late yesterday, Yahoo announced a deal with Twitter that should have people seeing a lot more tweets as they navigate different Yahoo-owned properties. The deal has ramifications for developers, too, and Yahoo touched on them with one official blog post.
Yvonne French, a product manager over Yahoo Social Platforms, made two quick references on the Yahoo Developer Network Blog, starting out by saying, “If you are an application developer and want to publish your user activities to the Yahoo! Updates stream and benefit from our massive global distribution (more than 600 million monthly unique visitors), check out the Yahoo! Updates API.”
French later added, “Activities that users currently share via Yahoo! Updates – such as commenting on an article, rating a movie, or creating a Fantasy Sports team – can optionally be broadcast to their Twitter stream as Tweets. Eventually, we will extend this capability to developers too – if users of your application currently publish their activities to Yahoo! Updates, they will have the option to also publish these activities into their Twitter stream.”
So there’s some semi-exciting news for you (it would admittedly be more interesting if some target dates or deadlines had been given). We’ll try keep on an on what Yahoo does in the weeks and months ahead.
