Working With Adjustment Layers

This isn’t exactly a tutorial, but it will show you how to use adjustment layers and get the most out of them. I’ll go through them in stages. Throughout the tutorial I’ll be using one image, here it is:

Adjustment Layer: Levels

Levels can add a dramatic effect to any picture.

It can also just alter the levels to give that image that little boost.

Adjustment Layer: Brightness/Contrast

Brightness & Contrast can be used very effectively. The way I used this adjustment layer on the picture makes it look like there is a beam of light shining through. This adjustment layer and be used very often!

Adjustment Layer: Curves

The Curves is a major adjustment layer. It is very powerful, you should use it to your advantage. Experiment with it, that’s the key.

Adjustment Layer: Exposure

This is also a very powerful adjustment layer. Use it well.

Adjustment Layer: Vibrance

This just basically gives the image more color around that image.

Adjustment Layer: Hue/Saturation

This adjustment layer only works if you’re changing the color of someones skin etc or a graphic, not a whole picture.

Color Balanceis basically the same but its for the experts.

Adjustment Layer: Black & White

You don’t need a picture for this one. It basically goes black and white and you can change the colors showing different shades of gray etc…

Adjustment Layer: Filter

This effect changes the color of the whole picture to give it a cool/warm homey effect, etc. This one looks cold.

Adjustment Layer: Channel Mixer

This adjustment layer for simple man terms merges the main channels of the image with each other when changing the options.

I’ve covered the main adjustmebt layers now. I hope you learnt something from this!
