The trade association that represents the UK games industry has released a report documenting its makeup.  TIGA took a look at the sector by surveying 78 development firms on a number of different subjects.

First let’s address the issue of the average developer’s age.  If you didn’t already know, it turns out the idea of a bunch of teenagers fooling around isn’t accurate.  TIGA said in a statement, “The average size of an independent developer is 51.  The average size of an independent developer who also publishes games is 45.”

As for the stereotype that small teams of people are working together in basements, the statement said, “The average size of a publisher owned studio is 245.”

Here’s perhaps the one pair of facts that match the public opinion of game developers: “Games development businesses on average employ a workforce comprising 88 per cent male and 12 per cent female.”

Maybe that information will help developers figure out where they lie on a sort of industry bell curve.  Or maybe it’ll just satisfy some folks’ curiosity.  There you have it, in any event.
