Speed Up Your Website With Google's Page Speed Service

Web speed continues to be a hot topic in 2011…especially in the Google camp.

We’ve already seen Google launch the Page Speed browser extension (2 years ago), the mod_pagespeed Apache module (last year) and the Page Speed Online tool and API earlier this year.

Well Google’s back with a new service. Google’s new Page Speed Service promises to rapidly increase the speed of your website – potentially up to 60% according to their testing.

From their service page:

“Page Speed Service is an online service to automatically speed up loading of your web pages. Page Speed Service fetches content from your servers, rewrites your pages by applying web performance best practices and serves them to end users via Google’s servers across the globe.”

While the service is only being offered to a handful of webmasters at this stage, given there’s already several services available that offer a similar solution, I think it’s only a matter of time before it’s rolled out to everyone.

So how does the new Google Page Speed Service work??

It’s quite simple really. Essentially by pointing your DNS CNAME to Google, they serve your website content for you via their network of servers around the globe. Obviously they have faster servers and more of them, so with your website being published via Google, users get a much speedier experience.
