Five Effective Color Wheels

One of the more effective parts of a website is it’s color scheme. A site with too many colors or colors that don’t match or colors which annoy the users could cause large issues. Humans are visual beings, and color is one of the things that will lead us to liking or disliking something, or in our case a website. Here are five simple to use resources which will make it easier to choose colors for your website.

1- VisiBone’s Color Charts

Visibone should be one of the first resources young developers should learn to use. Their color chart lists the possible websafe colors, and for developers, both young and old, it can be a very big help.

2 -PageTutor’s ColorPicker

PageTutor’s ColorPicker is very simple, a clean interactive way to choose what colors to use on your site. The color picker will give you a preview of what the colors look like to the right of it, along with examples for common HTML elements. If you wanted to get an idea of how your text color will look on the background color of your choice, you can see it “live”. You can also change the values of the colors you choose based on their red, green, and blue values without having to try to guess.

3- All Profit, All Free

Allprofitallfree.com’s color wheel is nice. Not only does it allow you to click a color and create shades of that color, it also allows you other methods to create colors. You can put in the RGB value, Hex value, or even the HSL value of a color. By allowing all of these options, you can easyily convert a color in an image to the Hex value for a site. The only issue I have with this color wheel is that it doesn’t work properly with the Opera.

4- Febooti Color Chart Picker

This is another interactive color chart, and it is great. Unlike Allprofitallfree’s color wheel, it will not allow you to convert colors based on other values, but it does save the colors you have chosen. This is a great feature that will allow you to compare if a darker green will be better than a lighter green for your design. Another feature that Febooti has is the ablilty to give you the actual color, a web smart, and a web safe version of the same color.

5- 4096 Color Wheel

4096 Color Wheel, and Febooti’s Color Chart are very similar. Both have a lot of the same features, but I like the ability to add your own hex value and the script choosing a color that is similar and determing if it is web safe, web smart, or unsafe. Along with the color wheel, there are some other color related resources.
