As simple and straightforward as the “like” button sounds, Facebook’s just updated it in several ways, and developers should perhaps pay attention. The company even considered the updates worthy of a special post on the Facebook Developer Blog.
In the post, engineer Jerry Cain noted that one new feature is “[t]he ability to like canvas URLs for Facebook applications that represent things such as a cause, movie, or any other real world object.”
Then there’s also “[t]he ability to link a Like button to a Facebook Page,” and a “‘[b]ox count’ layout that displays the total number of likes above the button.”
All together, these options should encourage people to like more things and allow more folks to tell when something’s popular. That should work in developers’ favor.
What’s more, Cain hinted that other improvements are on the way.
