Creating A Vinyl Record Set

I was watching Family Guy last night and Peter was singing Christmas songs so it inspired me to do a vinyl record. So let’s begin.

To begin make a new document 800×800. Make a New layer and fill it with black. Then we are going to add a gradient overlay.

  • Gradient Overlay
          New Gradient Style As Follows:
    1. Blend Mode: Normal
    2. Color 1: #7D910F – Location 0%
    3. Color 2: #AEC31f – Location 100%
    4. Style: Linear

Drag out guides at 400 and 400. Next select your Elipse Tool. Make sure “Create New Shape Layer” is select in the tool options. Now Place your tool in the intersection of the guides. Holding ATL+Shift drag out a circle 40 pixels from the edges of the document. Now we are going to add some styles to this layer.

  • Drop Shadow

    2. Color: #000000
    3. Distance: 4
    4. Size: 4
  • Inner Shadow

Make a new layer. Then find a good picture of peter griffin that you like and remove the color by going to Image > Adjustment > Desaturate. Then erase as much or as little of him as you like. Finally scale him to fit on our white label and set the layer style to linear.

Grab your Elipse Tool and make sure “Create New Shape Layer” is still selected. Holding ATL+Shift drag out a circle 395 pixels from the edges of the document. Now we are going to add a couple blending options.

  • Inner Shadow
    1. Distance: 0
    2. Size: 7
  • Gradient Overlay:
    1. Blend Mode: Normal
    2. Color 1: #7D910F – Location 0%
    3. Color 2: #AEC31f – Location 100%
    4. Style: Radial

Then Add Text “Side A” like below:

Then just below the side A text add this:

  • 1. Look At The Snow In The Yard
  • 2. Silent Knight
  • 3. There Up In My Bum
  • 4. Jingle Balls
  • 5. Holy Crap Its Christmas
  • 6. He Knows

Grab your elipse tool again only this time set the tool to “Paths”. Drag out a circle from the center 290 pixels from the edge of the document. Next grab your text tool and click on the path. Then type out “Peter Griffin Sings The Christmas Classics”. Then adjust the text so it evenly fills only the top half of the path.

Now that we have the Vinyl Record created we still need to make the slip cover and the hard shell cover. So we start with the slip cover. Grab your rectangule Tool make sure “Shape Layer” is reselected. Make a square shape 35 pixels from the edge of our document. Then grab your elipse tool and select the “Subtract from shape area (-)” option and make a circular selection the size of the label on the record. Now we need to add a gradient overlay and a satin.

  • Gradient Overlay:
    1. Blend Mode: Normal
    2. Color 1: #818181 – Location 0%
    3. Color 2: #A5A5A5 – Location 25%

    2. Opacity: 50%
    3. Angle: 20°
    4. Distance: 8
    5. Size: 34
    6. Contour: Gaussian

Make a new circular shape the size of the record label. set the layer fill to 0% then we need to add a Inner Shadow.

  • Inner Shadow
    1. Blend Mode: Multiply
    2. Color: #000000
    3. Distance: 0
    4. Size: 8

Now download Asset02 here and add it to our document. Then CTRL+Click the slip layer to make a select. Cut the selection from the Asset02 layer and delete the excess. Then go to Image > Adjusments > Desaturate. Finally set this layer blend to Hard Light and the fill to 20%.

Now we are going to make the hard shell cover. Make a Square 25 pixles from the edges of our document and fill it with white.

Make a new layer and Add some snow flakes like below, use a grunge style brush to give them more detail if you like.

Then add this text “Peter Griffin Making My Brown Eye Blue Christmas”.

  • Text Settings For “Peter Griffin”:
    1. Font: Old English Text MT
    2. Size: 50
    3. Tracking: 20
    4. Vertical Scale: 125%
    5. Horizontal Scale: 120%
  • Text Settings For “Making My Brown Eye Blue Christmas”:

    3. Leading: 40

Now Download Asset01 here. Then add it to our document. Then go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontally. Then scale Peter down to fit on the cover’s right hand side. Lastly merge all the cover layers together and add an Inner Shadow.

  • Inner Shadow
    1. Blend Mode: Multiply
    2. Color: #BECCD7
    3. Distance: 0
    4. Size: 15

And you are done. Here is the final version in all three states.

Send me a link to your version and I will post them here!
