App Store Receives $11M In Funding

An app store that operates a little outside the mainstream has received a major endorsement in the form of financing.  GetJar now has an additional $11 million to its name thanks to a Series B funding round and Accel Partners.

GetJar describes itself as the world’s second-largest app store, and has chalked up over one billion downloads so far.  Moving forward, it’s seeking to deal with multiple mobile operating systems, including Android, BlackBerry, and Symbian.

That could benefit lots of people.  Rich Wong of Accel Partners said in a statement, “Mobile app developers need to get discovered, build a marketing channel for mobile users, and scale to massive user bases. . . .  GetJar has led the industry to create this unique, cross platform app store solution.”

Ilja Laurs, the founder and CEO of GetJar, also said, “We look forward to our continued partnership with Accel Partners and this new funding will be instrumental in taking GetJar to the next level in our business strategy for aggressive global expansion and product development.”

Developers who haven’t already checked out GetJar should consider doing so, then.  It’s not every app store (or any of them, really) that can attract funding in this manner.
