Alibris, Mashery Launch API Developer Portal

Developers who are interested in going in a different direction from all the usual wallpaper apps and games have a new opportunity to do so.  Alibris and Mashery have launched an API developer portal for the sake of letting devs build apps to access the Monsoon Commerce Solutions network.

If that sounds a little random, allow us to connect a couple of dots.  Alibris is a division of Monsoon Commerce Solutions, and the full network consists of independent sellers and a selection of over 140 million new and used books, textbooks, movies, and music.  Mashery deals in API management tools.

Then a formal statement issued by Alibris added, “The Alibris API was used to build the new ‘Alibris Recommends’ application for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, introduced today and available free in Apple’s App store.  The application utilizes Alibris’s search and recommendation APIs to help users find books they’ll love.”

This could be a way to reach a somewhat underserved segment of the population.  There’s plenty of stuff out there for social types and casual gamers, after all, but the bookworm is a neglected breed of individual.

A few free ideas: organized book reviews, a bestseller list, or maybe something that would inform people what novels celebrities have been spotted with.
